A Note From The Big Kahuna:

Yay! It's July! I now feel as though Summer is REALLY here. I mean, in Texas, if you choose to use the temperature as the indicator of the seasons.....well we would only have two seasons (in a good year). So, even though it has been REALLY darn hot here for months.....when it starts getting over 100 degrees (ha ha ha ha).....that's when it's finally SUMMER baby! Time for BBQ's, swimming at the pool (everyday-just to cool off) and make that annual trip to the beach.

June was fabulous! My oldest is now out of school and I feel as though I am an Olympian who has just completed my leg of the race and handed the baton off to the next runner. Except, then I snap out of the daze and realize she dropped the baton during the hand off. Kids! Remind me again why we WANT them? LOL Seriously, I am proud of this milestone but, she is so unprepared I feel. I know we have done everything in our power to guide her and prepare her for this step but, now that it is here, I can see that 18 is not a magic number. It is not the age that matters, it is the wisdom, knowledge, experience and maturity that propels us to those next levels of our lives. They can come at any time and most of the time, we make the leap without even knowing that we have. For now, I just continue to guide her along her life's path....waiting for it's next turn.

WAKE UP! Gosh....I put all of you to sleep. Hee hee!

Onto the fun! This month at Scrapable is yet another fun filled month. We have a guest designer joining us this month, Lei-out of the Week and Month contests with prizes starting, a BIG sale, a new collab and much, much more.

Today I was browsing the site looking at all the new products in the store and although I know our Cabana Girls are always busy putting out new product, I guess I just never paid attention to how much product they really create for us! Their have been over 100 new items added to the store since our last issue. That is unbelievable! Round of applause for our AWESOME Cabana girls!!!

Last month, we challenged all of our Island visitors to help us "Name the News". Whomever came up with a name that we wound up selecting would recieve a $10 traveler's cheque (gift certificate) to Scrapable. Well, of course, I could not even begin to try and decide this on my own as we had 49 suggestions! YES, FORTY-NINE!!!! So, I called on the troops (Cabana and Hula Girls) for their help. After tallying everyone's votes......Catgoddess's "THE TIKI TIMES" won by a landslide. A big thank you to all who participated. There were so many great submissions and I hope to find uses for many of them around the island. And Catgoddess.....we will be waiting to see fabulous lei-outs created from the purchases you will be making with your prize money!!!

Lei-out of the Week and Lei-out of the Month

July will begin our Lei-out of the Week and Lei-out of the Month activities. Each week a layout will be selected as our Lei-out of the Week and featured in our weekly newsletter that is released on Fridays. The winner of each week's Lei-out of the Week will receive a FREE cabana girl collaboration kit of their choice. Those selected Lei-outs of the Week will then be voted on for Lei-out of the Month. The Lei-out of the Month will be featured in the monthly "The Tiki Times" and win a $5 travelers cheque (gc).

DOOHIKEY DESIGNS - GUEST DESIGNER

From July thru September, we are pleased to have Shari of Doohikey Designs as a guest designer at Scrapable. During her visit to the island, you will get the opportunity to know her and her designs. She will be designing at least one exclusive kit for us during her visit and will be participating in our Collaborations as well.

Here is Doohikey Designs interview:

1.What is the name of the designer responsible for the creative designs of Doohikey Designs?
My name is Shari and I go by Doohikey Designs for branding purposes, plus people always call me the wrong name! LOL!

2. Where do you live?
I resided in the nestled mountains of luscious, Layton, UT; 20 minutes away from Salt Lake City. My hubby and I chose to make a home there, it’s close enough to the city, but we can still be close enough to the mountains and country. Plus, I still have to have access to shopping!

3. Tell us about yourself, your family, etc.
I live with my husband of course, and we are surrounded by my family and his. We are currently trying to expand our family, so wish us luck!!! We are very family orientated and are always doing family events. I love to watch my nieces and nephews whenever possible! My husband does Direct TV Service Calls, and I’m a graphic designer, digital designer, and I am currently creating some patterns for quilting, needlework, and punch needle. I also, love to make handmade items, which I’m addicted too! We both love to be outdoors, garden, spend time with families, addicted to certain tv shows, and enjoy going to movies. My hubby is a Harry Potter Fan, and well, I love TWILIGHT Series!!! I think that pretty much cover’s it, so far! We are always looking for new adventures.

4. When and how did you become involved in Digital Scrap Design?
I’ve been a Graphic Designer for 15 years, and I decided that I wanted to do what I love, and that’s Scrapbooking! I decided to start creating some kits, and see where it has taken me. I was in the SYTYCD contest this year, which was rather fun! I love mixing in different media’s, I’m addicted to Photoshop, Illustrator, and other art mediums. I do hybrid and digital scrapbooking. I just got tired of doing the same corporate in and out day job, that I needed to expand my creativity and be on my own. That is how Doohikey Designs was born!

5. Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration at the oddest places, it can be from a candy wrapper to just shopping and hearing someone’s conversation, and be sparked with an idea. Sometimes I have felt overwhelmed, that I now keep a journal to write my ideas down, and when I need a reminder of my ideas I reference to that. Plus, color is a huge inspiration to me, with mixtures of textures. I am very texture oriented, and the other day I was holding my niece in her blankie, and I had something inspire me to work on a kit I’m currently working on. So, it’s really hard to pinpoint just one thing for me in where I get my inspiration, because it’s always surrounding me day by day!

6. Which of your designs is your "all time" favorite?
Wow, that’s hard to say what my favorite is so far! One of my kits I’m working on is actually my favorite, and it’s the Birthday Bash Boy! I’m always partial to what I create, so that’s going to always change, because as a designer I strive to make each kit even better!

7. Tell us 10 things that would surprise us about you.

I am addicted to Diet Pepsi, and I’m currently trying to wing myself off of it.
I usually don’t always like to read, but Twilight Series, I can read, and read, and read.
Harry Potter, I can’t get past the 4th chapter of the first book, but I watch the movies to support my hubby.
I’ve been married seven years, and no kids, but... I’ve had some medical issues throughout that time.
I’d rather design that clean all the time.
I didn’t fluff in front of my hubby until it’s almost a year into our marriage.
I love to cook, but I hate the clean up. Is that just me?
I love to shop, however I’m striving at becoming a better person and starting to budget.
I love to go camping, but at times I’d rather stay at a 4-star hotel, with running water.
I love to play games, and I’m very competitive!

8. Who are a few of your favorite designers and why?
I love Shabby Princess! I just love how she mixes her colors and textures, and before I started I called her and got some advice. I also love Shabby Miss Jenn, I love the richness that she brings in each kit, she’s very chic, hip, and fun!

9. Where (type of set up or place in your home, etc.) and When (time of day, weekends, etc.)do you design?
I am a Mac person, and I have a desktop and a laptop. I’m mostly on my laptop these days, because I can prop my feet up, grab my wacom board and start to design. I design all the time, whenever I have a spare moment, when we are watching TV, or when I can’t shut my mind down.. I’m designing something..I just need to complete the kits I have! :)

10. Name 3 things that you like to do in your spare time (hobbies, interests, etc.)

Quilting/Sewing – I make blankies, tutu’s, and other handmade goods I sell on Etsy, and it relaxes me.
Punch Needle - I am designing my own patterns right now, and it’s so fast it’s instant gratification.
Jewelry Making – I love looking at the colors of each bead and making something that I can wear or give as a gift.

Map Quest~ In this Challenge, you are given a map (template) to create a lei-out with.

Ridin' the Wave~ This a Speed Scrap. 7 steps will be started at the top of the hour, followed by 1 more instruction every ten minutes through the hour.

After the 7th and final instruction you'll have 1 additional hour to finish and post your Lei-out. All in all, this will take about 2 hours.

Snorkeling Lesson~ Challenge yourself and learn a new a technique to improve your lei-outs.

Souvenirs~ In this Challenge, you will be given specific Souvenirs to use in your lei-out.

Treasure Hunt~ A list of treasures will be given. Make a beautiful Lei-out with this list - and only this list.

X Marks the Spot~ In this Challenge, lei-outs are created based on a specific title.

Quick Page Exchange~ You will be given a 50% off coupon for a kit. With that kit you will make a quick page.

All quick pages will be shared with everyone that submitted a quick page. There are no points given for this challenge since the quick pages are the reward.

Scenic View~ Photo Challenge, more details to come.

Island Manuscript~ Font Challenge, you will be introduced to a font and lei-outs will be created using this font.

Hybrid~ You will be shown a project where you will be putting your digi kits and talent together.
